Dear Fur Coat Friends

This season is full of Fur Coat frolics! We give you some tips on vintage shopping for this season.  Camel coats are oozing appeal and Jimmy Choo is waiting in the wings at H&M. There is good news for fat knees and suggestions for the few of us who refuse to afford a pair of UGGS!

Vintage Fabulous!

It has to be said ladies, that those Fur Coat designers had the No Knickers vintage and charity shoppers in mind for Autumn 2009. So have fun and enjoy shopping intelligently! FCaNK recommends some charity and vintage shop staples for your Autumn/Winter wardrobe.  Watch out for these items in your local vintage, charity shop or swishing event or remind yourself of some charity shopping principles and vintage shopping sites on our Vintage shopping page.

The Velvet Jacket

Velvet is making a well deserved glorious come back. Look out for velvet dresses and jackets as they are a fantastic addition to this season's wardrobe.  The beauty of velvet is that it is at home at both a black tie event and a casual supper with a friend. For a cocktail party, a velvet jacket, statement jewellery, black satin cigarette pants and smoky eyes are Cinderella perfect! For a more casual look, team your velvet number with a pair of skinnies, ballet flats and a statement scarf.

Often with vintage velvet, a silk lining is thrown in for free..how adorable! Oh and don't be afraid of braiding or piping around the lapels and pockets; these add a cute vintage, original touch that will set you apart from the mainstream 'Next' highstreet bores! Keep your eyes on SavvyRow.co.uk for a gorgeous vintage classic.. in the ladies vintage section or keep your eyes peeled fo small men's smoking jackets. Our gentlemen friends at Savvy Row are gorgeously helpful and if you commission them, they will hunt for a great little vintage classic on your behalf. We love it!

A Sparkly, Sequin Layer

For evenings out and a touch of cute appeal during the day, a sequin cover up, shawl, or top does not go amiss. Obviously, you can head towards disaster when buying sequinned looks in charity shops. You really need to know what to look for!

  • Our first tip is to seek out a vintage shop this is more likely to have vetted the style disasters and stock the sequins high up on the style thermometer!
  • A sound basic rule for finding a great sequinned garment is that the smaller the sequins, the less cheap the outfit will look.
  • A few sequins missing or some are a little tarnished, can add a certain style credibility. Check what material the sequins are sewn onto.
  • A silk lining is always going to be a mark of quality.
  • Black sequins are particularly stylish this season, a simple way to stay within style parameters!
Be careful with the sequin purchases, they can easily veer away from cute appeal to looking tacky and trashy. There is an extremely fine line, and if you are unsure where the line is drawn…just don't go anywhere near it!

Houndstooth Tailoring Houndstooth tailoring

Now for the FCaNK season's favourite item. A really brilliant vintage buy this season is the Houndstooth jacket, skirt or coat. This favourite vintage goody was found on ebay at wonderland_clothing, how fabulous!

It's really difficult to go wrong with a Houndstooth garment because the fabric is usually twinned with some classic tailoring. Remember that the buttons might be grievously garish but they can be removed and brought up to date with a little creativity and a local haberdashery. Or visit josyrose for your extra touch of button finery.

Caramel Coated

Camel coats are at the top of our vintage list for this season. A wonderful look for golden toned beauties. Camel coats have been absent from high street shelves for some time, so if you fall in love with a buttery caramel coat this winter...it is worth investing.  We have a few things to say about investing in a coat for this season so take a peek at FCaNK before you purchase!

If you are not sure that Camel is your colour and don't know which colours suit you, don't splash out on a style consultant.  Take a look at our High Street shopping tips and be your own colour consultant!

The Low Down On UGGS

Many of us will be surprised to see that UGGS are still a favourite for the A/W wardrobe boot. If you are Fur Coated enough to afford a pair, buy the calf length boots and don't roll them down.  They make a bigger style statement and you will never be cold again!  Fur Coat particularly likes the hiking sole tall UGG boots in Sand but then she's loaded!

If you cannot afford UGGS, don't get fakes. Just try to be more creative. Buy gorgeous coloured leg warmers for warmth and wear with leggings, up to the skinny knee, over the top of a casual boot. H&M have some fabulous cable knit plum and grey toned leg warmers for £5 each. They're cute but not brilliant on the wool content. If you want the real Fur Coat warmers, visit Tabio or Wolford .

Rocket Dog HoneyPupsIf you feel that you have to fake the UGGS look then Rocket Dog, HoneyPup boots are our firm favourite. They are comfortable and warm, look cute, but are half the price. Schuh stock the rocket dog collection in Chestnut Brown, Black and this purple number...which we are less convinced by!  Beware if you are shopping online, you often need to go up a size.

Jimmy Choo Shoe at H&M

From Nov 13th P.M. in London and Nov 14th for the rest of the UK, H&M stores will stock their shelves with Jimmy Choo designed shoes! How fabulous and exciting! We will be first in line as soon as we get the childcare in place! Get your tootsies into those glory shoes. In the meantime, Zara have some amazing, tasteful grey gladiator winter heels for work…scoot down there as quickly as you can because they will be snapped up quickly!

Silhouettes For Fat Knees

Oh gosh, at last, those of us with fat knees have been saved by the bulky up top designs. Go wide at the top to balance out the width at your knees. So batwing short wool dresses will be fine for you this season, at last a short dress for people with big legs…hurrah! Great batwing knitted dresses have been spotted at H&M for £18 and Warehouse for £40+…go forth and enjoy! These versatile Warehouse dresses are comfortable and great value for a classic, understated style for work or mooching about. We particularly love the wrap dress a great basic for any wardrobe. The drape dress belt needs adapting. Use a wide, statement belt worn at the hip and use a long sleeved tee in complimentary colours. The drape dress has a glorious simplicity to it so keep the lines pure and don't feel the need to flounce it up if that's not your style!
