We all know that Benetton's past reputation was built on it's fine knitwear that one could buy in more colour ways than you could possibly dream of. Fur Coat has vivid memories of her parents bringing her just about a suitcase full of gorgeous clothes from Benetton in 1986. Her parents had just been to Europe and knew that she loved the brand. The knits were so fine and soft and the shirts were made from crisp cotton. Fur Coat loved the brand so much that in 1987 she took a job at one of their Perth stores. Their clothes then were still fantastic quality.
Sadly, this reputation has been a distant dream for Benetton for a while now. They changed their direction and with that their quality. Everything went down hill! When we first reviewed Benetton in the Summer of 2008, we decided not to make this page go live. The clothes were just too uninspiring. Benetton had taken short cuts on the quality of the materials that they were using. They were now on par with UniQlo. The materials were stiff and thin. The cashmere was disappointing. It was not particularly soft and the sweaters and cardigans were too short. We all need to something to cover our muffin tops and the knitwear was certainly not going to perform that function.
That said! FCaNK likes Benetton's direction this season. Check out our Shopping List below. The FCaNK message here is to buy something fun and funky for one season here, but don't expect it to last. The quality simply isn't there.
The Shopping List
- Great for basic wardrobe staples like tees and knits.
- Cotton statement jacket £49
- Flowing full shorts to wear with the statement jacket. A bit too on trend and watch that they suit your body type! You don't want to look like a sad 80's throw back!
- Loads of Gingham for SS10
- Fun and funky full cotton skirts. Good quality at upper end of No Knickers prices.
- Cute denim rouched tops £25
- Soft denim culloutes £39
- Wedges are big this season in neutral and brown colour ways
- Good basic work wear. Jackets @ £69, trousers £39. Watch the quality for wearing next season.
- Nice pin stripe cotton shirts £25
- Non leather bags £25
- Nightwear is yummy and cosy!
- Shorty short in a white denim £17
- Coats were great on style but fell down on quality.
Purchase With Caution
Avoid their over branded bags!
The Benetton logo Bags were simply awful! At £49, they are not cheap and are a bad advertisement for you to walk around town with. Zero style points here!
Don't Overspend
Watch your pennies here. You don't want to spend too much here as it may not have the lasting power of other brands. This is particularly for work wear.
