Autumnal Comfort Food; Right On Your Doorstep
Suzie and I have been turning our minds to FCaNK food for the coming winter months. I am a big believer in making food from scratch and steer away from processed food as much as is practically possible. UUUUGGGHHH! So very reminiscent of Vesta meals of the 80's.
My husband and I live in a London terrace with not quite a postage stamp for a back garden. We do try though and grow as much as we can. We have all our herbs inside in gorgeous black Le Creuset pots picked up from none other that TK Maxx. Goodness me, I love that store!
We also have a small triangular vegetable patch in our garden. It provides us with an abundance of good food every season. We are coming to the end of our tomatoes. The strawberries are long gone. I made THE most tantalising tomato soups, sauces, ragus and plain old salads with these red beauties. We ate organically ( I don't used pesiticides - I just let the insects do their thing) and saved money at the same time. Tomatoes are so easy to grow. They just need to be watered regularly.
We are now focusing on pumpkins. We won't be able to fit many in but still, we are savouring the thought of pumpkin soup made from our home grown pumpkins. Yummy!
If you can't bear the thought of gardening but crave farmers market type veges and fruit, look no further than Garsons in Esher.
Garsons is a pick your own farm with 35 different fruit, vegetables and flowers to pick throughout the year. If you have children, it is a wonderful day out for them and so important if they are growing up in our relatively sterile urban environment. It is the biggest in the UK and has another branch in Titchfield, Hampshire. The prices are really reasonable and the veggies and fruit all have a much longer shelf life that your supermarket counterparts.
Do yourself a favour and check it out. It is well worth the visit!
